The method involves continuously detecting actual brake pedal path or actual brake pedal angle or actual brake pressure during energy recovery, and determining parameters, if vehicle is braked quickly. An intended quick deceleration of the vehicle is detected, when the actual brake pedal path or actual brake pedal angle or actual brake pressure exceeds a predetermined threshold value. An internal combustion engine remains coupled, when the actual brake pedal path or actual brake pedal angle or actual brake pressure exceeds a predetermined threshold value.
