The method involves collecting the blood emerging from a slaughtered animal (3) in a blood collecting container (21) that is recorded by a camera, particularly a thermal imaging camera (23). A predetermined criterion of a safe death of the slaughtered animal is evaluated from the images of the blood collecting container recorded by the camera. The processing of the slaughtered animal is blocked, when the criterion is not met. The recorded images of the blood collecting container are evaluated on the attainment or non-attainment of a predetermined blood level in the blood collection container. An independent claim is provided for a device for detecting the death of a slaughtered animal after a killing process by cutting-off.
