The method involves detecting an external respiratory movement of a subject (7), continuously, with an external sensor (1) to obtain an external signal (5). Initial values and final values of an amplitude, of the external signal, are determined. A body portion (8) irradiated between the initial and final amplitude values during the respiratory movement in a predetermined spatial target area. The initial and final values are adjusted independently of each other with a time shift between the course of the external signal and the course of internal signal (6). An independent claim is included for a device for respiratory gating for a medical irradiation of a body portion.
