The method involves detecting signals of tire pressure sensors (11, 21) by a receiving antenna (2), where the receive antenna is aligned in travel direction. A determination is made by an evaluation unit (5) based on an external identifier to check whether the detected signals are produced by an external vehicle (20). The detected external vehicle is classified as a preceding vehicle (20) by the evaluation unit when the external identifier is successively detected in n-times. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the received signals is evaluated, so that a spacing is determined from the SNR. The tire pressure sensors are designed as tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS)-sensors. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting a preceding vehicle.
