The method involves determining a functional state of temperature sensors of a battery system by comparing temperature values provided by the temperature sensors with expected set temperature for a current operating state of the battery system. The values detected by the sensors are provided, and the set temperature for the current operating state of the battery system is determined. An error function of the temperature sensors of the battery system is determined when amount of deviation between the sensors and the temperature exceeds a determined threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a battery management system comprising a unit for performing function monitoring of temperature sensors of a battery system.
