The control device (500) has a control unit, another control unit and third control unit, which are mutually redundant, configured and adapted for generating the engine control signal. A logic unit is provided with a switch unit, where the switch unit has an actuator connection. The control units are connected with each other for performing a function diagnosis by a diagnostic bus and for transmitting a status signal obtained from the function diagnosis to the logic unit through a data bus. The logic unit is designed for determining a selection signal from the status signal. An independent claim is included for a fuel injection system, particularly a common rail system.
