The method involves generating two different reference communication signals, and determining a metric for the reference communication signals, which are resulted from a cross correlation between communication signals (7-1, 7-2) to be analyzed and the respective reference communication signals. An adaptive modulation parameter is computed. The reference communication signals are generated with signal parts assigned to a sub-channel in such a manner that the reference communication signals are differentiated from each other by selection of different training sequences and/or the parameter.
