The method involves guiding a belt (14) of a machine i.e. belt calender (12), using two guide rolls (24, 26) to manufacture and/or treat a fibrous material web (16). An acoustic measurement accomplished in a region of the belt is monitored. An airborne sound measurement is performed by a sound pressure sensor (18) i.e. microphone, where the acoustic measurement takes place in close proximity of the belt, and is made in a portion of the belt between the guide rolls. A remaining service life of the belt is derived based on the acoustic measurement. An independent claim is also included for a machine for manufacturing and/or treating a fibrous material web.
