Gelcoat composition comprises (in wt.%) at least one unsaturated polyester resin (50-95), at least one non-volatile reactive monomer (5-50), pigments and fillers (5-25), an accelerator (0.1-5), an amine accelerator (0.1-5), an ester (0-3) and additives (0.1-5), where the gel coat composition comprises volatile reactive organic compound monomer (less than 5 wt.%), where at least one unsaturated polyester resin is solvent-free and is liquid at room temperature. An independent claim is also included for producing the gel coat composition, comprising (i) mixing at least one unsaturated polyester resin (50-95 wt.%) with at least one non-volatile reactive monomer and homogenizing, (ii) dispersing pigments and fillers (5-25 wt.%) in the resulting homogenized mixture by means of a dissolver, and (iii) subjecting the obtained dispersed composition to fine grinding or fine dispersion, where the mixture is added with the accelerator (0.1-5 wt.%), the amine accelerator (0.1-5 wt.%) and additives (0.1-5 wt.%), where the starting materials are included such that the finished gel coat composition comprises volatile reactive organic compound monomer (less than 5 wt.%, preferably less than 0.5 wt.%).
