The method involves continuously determining a parameter for detecting an ignition failure depending on acceleration of a combustion engine by a monitoring method during operation of the engine. The parameter is compared with a predetermined variable threshold value such that the ignition failure is detected when the parameter exceeds the threshold value. A pre-conditioning of a powertrain is detected by another monitoring method such that low-frequency oscillations are occurred due to powertrain oscillations. An increase of the threshold value is carried-out during pre-conditioning detection.
