The method involves receiving street data provided by a street detector, particularly camera (13), with which the surrounding of a motor vehicle (11) is recorded and a Global positioning systemreceiver (14), particularly a navigation system, with which the street data is transferred to a controller (12) based on the received or stored map data. The mirror adjusting information is calculated from the received street data by the controller. A portion of the mirror surface of an exterior rear view mirror (10) is electrically adjusted based on the mirror adjusting information.
