The device (1) has a processing apparatus (2) i.e. drilling machine (3), with a tool (4) exhibiting a longitudinal axis and provided with a camera (11). A recordable optical marker is provided in a fixed position in relation to a processing area to be brought from the camera. A position and/or a direction code describing a position or alignment of the processing apparatus relative to the optical marker is determined and output based on the optical marker pointing camera images by an evaluation device (13). The camera is registered with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tool. The processing apparatus is selected from one of drill bit, a saw, a kirschner wire, a pointer, a screw thread cutter, a cannula, a needle, an awl or a screw driver.
