The invention relates to a method for the conversion of carbon dioxide or bicarbonates to formic acid derivatives with the use of a catalytic system consisting of a cobalt from cobalt salt and at least a tripodal tetrads action ligands. The catalyst complex can be used as a homogeneous catalyst. The present invention also relates to the new cobalt complexes.
