The method (300) involves determining radiation characteristic of a honking signal (310) using an operating force or an operation stroke of a horn actuator device to determine the honking signal. The radiation characteristic of the honking signal is determined from a set of selectable radiation characteristics. A volume, sound and/or frequency of the honking signal are determined as the radiation characteristic. The radiation characteristic of the honking signal is determined using magnitude and/or gradient of the operating force or operation stroke. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for determining a honking signal for a vehicle (2) an acoustic signaling device for a vehicle (3) a computer program product with a program code having a set of instructions for performing a method for determining a honking signal for a vehicle.
