The device has a gripper device (300) guided at a robot arm for receiving and transporting planar steel sheet plates. The gripper device includes a fork (310) with fork rakes (311) engaged below the plates. The fork is linearly adjustably arranged at the gripper device in a horizontal plane (H), so that the rakes are retracted into a furnace for loading or removal. Linear adjustment is carried out by a linear adjusting mechanism with linear actuators i.e. linear servomotors. The gripper device includes a heat shield in a form of an enclosure (320) for the plates.
