The thermionic and photoelectric generators comprise intermetallic compounds as low work function materials. The intermetallic compounds consist of an electron donor including cesium, calcium, strontium, barium, yttrium or rare earth elements, and an electron acceptor including germanium, tin, lead, magnesium, aluminum, indium, gallium, thallium, arsenic, antimony or bismuth. The intermetallic compounds comprise germanides, stannides, plumbides, aluminides indides, gallides, thallides, arsenides, antimonides or bismuthides of rare earth metals. The thermionic and photoelectric generators comprise intermetallic compounds as low work function materials. The intermetallic compounds consist of an electron donor including cesium, calcium, strontium, barium, yttrium or rare earth elements, and an electron acceptor including germanium, tin, lead, magnesium, aluminum, indium, gallium, thallium, arsenic, antimony or bismuth. The intermetallic compounds comprise germanides, stannides, plumbides, aluminides indides, gallides, thallides, arsenides, antimonides or bismuthides of rare earth metals or yttrium or thallides of alkali- or alkaline earth metals or magnesides or earth alkaline metals or rare earth metals, and an excess of electron donor.
