The retaining device has a forward displacement unit, with which a passenger (3) is displaced in time before the return movement in a forward movement (V) around a displacement path. The passenger is displaced in forward direction in the pre-cash phase from a vehicle-collapse-side adjusted comfort position (I) by the forward displacement path in a pre-cash position (II). The passenger is displaced in a backward direction in the following return displacement around the return displacement path in a crash position. An independent claim is included for a method for backward displacement of a passenger in a pre-crash-phase.
