The device has a vehicle seat (7), and a safety belt device (5) comprising a three-point-safety belt with a lap belt (9) and a shoulder belt (11). The vehicle seat and the belt device are provided for forwardly moving a passenger (3) around a forward displacement path before back shifting. An airbag (10) i.e. head impact airbag, is activated in a pre-crash-phase and provided for absorbing forward displacement (V) of the passenger under prevention of direct contact with a steering wheel (6) and/or an instrument panel. An inflatable cushion is integrated into a backrest (17) of the seat. An independent claim is also included for a method for protecting passenger in a motor vehicle.
