The method involves selecting driving stages with a gear selector lever which is arranged on center console. The individual gears are shifted up or down manually by shift paddles. The driving gear is selected by actuation of controls. The simultaneous actuation of two operating elements is enabled by insertion of neutral gear (N). The defect of the gear selector lever is shown by acoustic and/or optical and/or haptic warning.
