The method involves determining whether a voltage is applied at a high voltage network (3) of a vehicle (1), and outputting a signal to outside of the vehicle using a display unit (16) based on the determination of the voltage applied at the network, where the voltage amounts to 3-60 volt. An operating mode of the vehicle is determined and output. The network is optionally coupled with an electrical energy storage unit using a battery management system (15). Operability of the display unit is checked, and malfunction of the display unit is displayed based on the checked operability. The operating mode is selected from a group consisting of a locking state of a vehicle, seat occupancy of the vehicle, a movement state of the vehicle, an unlocking state of the vehicle, and/or an opening operation of the vehicle. The signal is selected from a group consisting of an optical signal, an acoustic signal and/or a radio signal. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a display device for a vehicle (2) a vehicle.
