The hybrid powertrain has two motor units each having drive shaft for delivering and receiving mechanical power. A power transmission unit is coupled with the drive shafts such that a frictional connection between the drive shafts is enabled. The power transmission unit is controlled such that the drive shafts are decoupled if control unit recognizes the free-wheel phase of powertrain shaft, so that the motor unit is deactivated. The drive shafts are frictionally coupled if the end of free-wheel phase is recognized, so that the motor unit is activated. An independent claim is included for method for operating hybrid powertrain.
