The method involves determining a start point for a required braking intervention for avoiding collision with an object in vehicle environment depending on distance, relative speed to collision object, time to collision and friction coefficient against the vehicle. Friction coefficient of a road is measured based on sensor data from an environment detecting system or is transmitted through a radio-based communication. The friction coefficient against the vehicle is measured from data of a camera sensor system, global positioning system (GPS) data or vehicle-to-vehicle communication data. An independent claim is also included for an emergency braking assistance unit for a vehicle.
