Producing a gallium-containing coating adherent on a ceramic or a metallic substrate, from bioactive glass melt, comprises grinding the glass melt and gallium salts to a particle size of = 40 mu m, preferably in an average particle size of = 20 mu m, mixing the grinded components and liquefied with a solvent, applying the liquid on the substrate, drying and sintering, where the bioactive glass melt contains gallium ions in the form of gallium compounds poorly soluble in aqueous media, and only small amounts of gallium ions are released into surrounding tissue due to low solubility.
