Enhancing strength of a component (1), comprises introducing residual stresses (7), by subjecting a first component surface (3) of the component to an action of force lying above a yield point; and temporarily cooling the first component surface to a very low temperature, which generates a temperature gradient between the first component surface and a second component surface (6), such that a thermal shrinkage of the layers of the component, adjacent to the first component surface is achieved by exceeding the yield strength.
