The camera (1) has a housing (2) for retaining optical and electronic camera components. A display device is in form of a touchscreen-display (3) arranged at the housing. Control elements are arranged at the housing. Camera functions e.g. image effects, are partly displayed on the display. The camera functions and current values of the camera functions are represented in a form of spatial limited application fields (11) i.e. camera application. The functions of the applications are activated with selection elements (22) and adjusted with the adjustment element (33). The selection and adjustment elements are designed as electromechanical elements such as a keyboard, and light or proximity sensors. The electromechanical adjustment element is designed as a scroll wheel, a scroll wheel with a click function, a slider, a key rocker, a double branch or a track ball/track pad. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling and operating a digital camera.
