The sensor (3) has a communication terminal for attaching the sensor to a data line (4) of a motor vehicle (1). A communication unit is designed to convert a sensor signal of the sensor into a communication signal, which conforms with a predesignated communication protocol, and to output the communication signal over the terminal such that digital data communication is established between the sensor and a control device (5) of the vehicle. The sensor is designed to output a test signal to the terminal under bypassing of the communication unit in a test mode. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system comprising a driver assistance device (2) a method for operating a sensor.
