The amplitude of a received signal is compared with the measured signal from the sensor, for obtaining the distance between motor vehicle and an object located in its surroundings, according to the echo delay time method. The sensor is switched to a configuration mode for determining the threshold value curve (10) by which a transmission signal is sent by the sensor and then a reception signal (15) is received, while determining the amplitude value of the received signal based on the threshold value curve.
