The system has a conduit (16) including an opening (18) by which a lubricant is selectively applied on an outer surface (38) of a gear box (1). A controllable valve (20) is provided for opening and closing the opening, where the valve includes an actuating element made from a shape memory alloy such as nickel-titanium alloy. A control unit supplies a voltage to the actuating element to actuate the valve, where the conduit is in the form of a tube (17). A pump (19) supplies the conduit with the lubricant. An independent claim is also included for a gear box.
