The acceleration and deceleration device has a machine shaft (1) for moving the mass (2) along the shaft axis (3). A machine shaft bearing (4) is firmly arranged at spindle and in clamping device and connected with the machine shaft. A shaft drive motor (5) with shaft deceleration element (6) and a mechanical unit (8) with mechanical energy storage (7) are arranged in such a way that the shaft drive motor transfers kinetic energy of shaft to mechanical energy storage. An independent claim is included for a method for operating device for accelerating and decelerating masses.
