Use of a polyester, bearing hydroxyl groups preparable by polycondensation of a polyol containing two primary OH-groups and at least a secondary OH-group with a dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride or ester bearing 16-400C-alkyl or 16-400C-alkenyl, as an antifoulant in the thermal treatment of liquid hydrocarbon media in the temperature of 100-550[deg] C, is claimed. Independent claims are included for: (1) reducing fouling in liquid hydrocarbon media during the heat treatment of the media at a temperature of 100-550[deg] C, where before and/or during the thermal treatment, polyester bearing hydroxyl groups is added to the liquid hydrocarbon; and (2) increasing life of plants used for the thermal treatment of hydrocarbons comprising, before and/or during the thermal treatment, adding polyester bearing hydroxyl groups to the liquid hydrocarbon.
