The method involves determining a turning point in a representation of a sound velocity as a function of a process time after initiation of cross-linking of reactive plastics or rubber with inserts. A fit function starting from the turning point is determined for prediction of a characteristic of the sound velocity. A final value of the sound velocity is determined by the fit function. The sound velocity measured during a cross-linking process is standardized using the final value. The determined, standardized sound velocity is used as a control variable in the cross-linking process.
