The method involves determining whether an object e.g. finger or hand, is present in monitored areas (12-14) by an optical sensor (11), where the monitored areas comprise a region outside of a path and adjacent to the path. Positional information of a moving element is determined by the optical sensor, where the moving element is provided an optical mark such as color marking and/or a barcode. A drive is controlled depending on the determination of the presence of the object in the monitored areas and the positional information, where the drive moves the moving element along the path. The moving element is selected from a window pane (10), a sliding roof, a seat or a door of a vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a protection device comprising a moving element.
