The method involves combining a lateral evidence, trajectories of the vehicle and object-oriented dynamic grid in a probabilistic manner by an object-oriented Bayes-network. The context information is obtained from a digital roadmap of a road segment, on which a vehicle is situated and from signals of vehicle-side sensors of the vehicle. A movement state of the vehicle, a control state of the vehicle, a driver activity state and event messages are determined.
