The airbag has a supporting structure comprising support elements (10) i.e. volume elements, where the supporting structure is movable from a storage position to a retention position under pressurization of the support elements by a medium e.g. air. The supporting structure partially surrounds a retention volume of the airbag in the retention position. Cross-sections (16, 18, 20, 28) of a portion of a volume (12) of the support elements are varied upon pressurization of the support elements by the medium. The cross-sections are tapered in an extending direction of the support elements.
