The airbag (1) has a main chamber (2) with a maximum volume, where the main chamber absorbs initial impact of a vehicle occupant in an accident situation. A pressure relief chamber (3) is arranged with another maximum volume. A gas generator is utilized for producing gas in the main chamber and the pressure relief chamber. A bypass pipe (4) is connected to the main chamber and the pressure relief chamber. The bypass pipe is always opened for allowing the gas to pass through when the gas is introduced into the main chamber. An independent claim is also included for a method for reduction of maximum gas pressure.
