The device (28) has two detecting units (30, 32) for detecting a charging capacity state of an energy storage unit (26) and a vehicle operating mode, respectively. A drive unit (22) actuates two switches based on the detected state and the mode. An electric machine (16) generates a current flowing through phase paths due to torque acting on a driven wheel (12). The storage unit is charged and not charged by the current flowing through the paths according to two control patterns if the detected state is different from and corresponds to a predefined charging capacity state, respectively. The vehicle operating mode represents generator operation of an electric machine, operation of a brake pedal, thrust operation of the vehicle and/or downhill driving operation of the vehicle. The energy storage unit is designed as a lithium ion battery. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for actuating an electric machine arranged in a vehicle (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for executing a method for actuating an electric machine arranged in a vehicle.
