The method involves activating or deactivating balancing process at battery cells using switches, so that balancing current flows between nodes to a battery cell. A battery cell voltage applied between the nodes of the respective battery cell and adjacent battery cell is calculated to compensate for an influence of a balancing current on a measuring voltage. The measured battery cell voltages are multiplied with predetermined weighting factors in dependence on the state of activation or deactivation state of switches. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a battery system; and (2) a motor car.
