The lamp (101) has lamp units divided into two lamp groups (102-105) e.g. LED. The lamp groups are variably controlled based on predetermined lightness of the lamp in such a manner that each lamp group is operated dependant on temperature in an optimized mode of operation. The lamp comprises operation apparatuses (106, 107) per lamp groups, where the operation apparatuses or one of the operation apparatuses actuate the lamp groups in the optimized mode of operation. A control unit adjusts the operation apparatuses dependant on predetermined lightness and temperature. The lamp groups are selected from a semiconductor luminous element, an LED, an incandescent lamp, a halogen lamp, a line lamp, a fluorescent tube, a gas discharge lamp and a down volt discharge lamp. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a lamp.
