The method involves coupling electric starter motor and control unit to the internal combustion engine. The electric starter motor is provided for starting the internal combustion engine after receiving a start request, in a self-running mode. The electric starter is controlled in an emergency mode such that the requested or minimum torque required for the drive of internal combustion engine is generated by the electric starter motor. The emergency mode is automatically started (20) when the failure of internal combustion engine is determined (10).
