The electrosurgical gripping instrument (1) has gripping arms (2) that are provided for gripping a biological tissue. Electrical coagulation electrodes (8) are formed for a coagulation of the tissue, and are arranged at the gripping arms. An activatable holding unit (7) is provided for holding the tissue independent of the gripping function of the gripping arms, and is arranged at the gripping arms. The holding unit is switched from a resting position into an active position, and is arranged in distant from a gripping surface of the coagulation electrode.
