The structure (2) comprises an inert material surrounding grains of an active storage material in form of a gas-permeable cladding structure. The storage material is provided in form of iron oxide and present in different chemical forms depending on a charging state of an electrical metal air energy storage cell (4), where each chemical form correlates with different volumes of the storage material. The cladding structures of the individual material grains form a scaffold structure. Inert supporting particles (22) are arranged between the cladding structures.
