The control unit (1) has a microcomputer (19) for stopping an engine (3) of a vehicle when a predetermined automatic stop condition is satisfied. The microcomputer is operated with a preset voltage. The microcomputer determines whether a measurement value stored in a memory unit i.e. backup RAM (35), reaches a predetermined threshold value and prevents that the measurement value reaches the threshold value. The microcomputer detects time during which the vehicle is in ignition-off state and adds the time to the measurement value.
