The derailleur (10) has a mount attached to a frame unit e.g. seat tube (11), and a movable chain guide separated from the mount. A linkage couples the movable chain guide to the mount. A discrete alignment indicator is placed on the movable chain guide, where the derailleur indicates an aligned position of the movable chain guide relative to a chain ring (3), and a target plane is coincident with or parallel to a chain ring plane. The discrete alignment indicators include marks, ridges, grooves, pointers, tolerance zones, or lines. An independent claim is also included for a method for aligning a front derailleur of a bicycle.
