High intensity, focused ultrasound (HIFU) is registered with imaging. The effects of transmission from a HIFU transducer (32), such as an increase in temperature, are recognized by a separate imaging system (40) (16). By means of a plurality of transmissions (12), a plurality of positions of the transmissions from the HIFU transducer are determined within the coordinates of the imaging system (16). Based on the detected effects, a transformation is calculated (20) which relates the coordinates of the imaging system (40) to the coordinates of the HIFU transducer. The transformation may be used to relate (26) positions shown on the images of the imaging system (40) to the application of HIFU to the coordinates of the HIFU transducer (32). The imaging system (40) may not need to scan the HIFU transducer or reference marker and no fixed relationship is required.
