The device has a heating unit for heating water, which is provided in an unpressurized water storage container. An electronic controller controls operation of the heating unit. The electronic controller includes a heating gradient-unit (11) for determining heating gradients of the water provided in the container, and an actual boiling point of the water based on an increase of the heating gradients. The electronic controller includes a protection unit, which determines a fault based on increase of the heating gradients, and deactivates the heating unit.
