The device has an electrical machine (20) that is provided with a magnetic gear (22) for contactless and speed translated torque transmission to the drive unit (12). A turbine wheel (18) is provided for removing the kinetic energy from an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine. The turbine wheel is accelerated and decelerated by the electrical machine. The magnetic gear is electrically controlled, while a turbocharger shaft (16) is formed between a compressor (14) and the turbine wheel. The magnetic gear is designed corresponding to a planetary gear with a center gear (24). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an air duct system for a powertrain of a motor vehicle; and (2) a method for operating a turbocharger unit.
