The method involves operating an electrical machine as a motor to match rotational speed of a drive component and a driven component of a coupling device associated with the machine and a crankshaft. The machine is coupled to the crankshaft, and the machine is operated as the motor to crank the engine. The machine is decoupled from the crankshaft when an engine speed exceeds an associated threshold, and the machine is operated as a generator to provide regenerative braking for an inertial component. An independent claim is also included for a system of managing inertial reaction torque in a vehicle powertrain, comprising an internal combustion engine.
