The method involves passing an exhaust gas stream comprising a mixture of nitrogen monoxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, hydrogen, water, carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen (16) through a downstream reactor for oxidation or reduction of constituents of exhaust gas that increases temperature and heats a downstream reactor to the oxidation or reduction operating temperature. A passage of the exhaust gas in contact with silver/alumina material, different absorber material is continued. A silver/alumina material is commenced with nitrous oxide oxidation function and nitrogen dioxide absorption following an engine cool-down period and a subsequent engine cold start.
