The device (1) has a traction or compression machine (3) receiving a test tube (2) and mechanically loading the test tube along a loading axis (30). A laser module (4) comprises a laser transmitter (41) and a laser receiver (42) arranged opposite to a laser emitter to form an observation axis perpendicular to the loading axis. The laser module is mounted in translation along the loading axis to allow a scan of the test tube to determine a profile of the test tube after loading. A processor (5) determines a law of characteristics of a material from the profile determined by the laser module. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining law of characteristics of a material forming a test tube.
