The method involves calculating a stability value of an indicated mean pressure within a combustion chamber (SET1) of a diesel engine, and comparing the stability value with a determined threshold value (SET2) to order and control an operation of a metal spark plug during a post-heating phase (POSTCHAUFF). A current temperature of the spark plug is reduced (SET3) by a given constant value if the stability value is greater than the threshold value. The current temperature is increased (SET4) by the given constant value if the stability value is less than or equal to the threshold value.
